The implant placement surgery is performed under local anesthesia in a dentist office. In rare cases the surgery is performed under general anesthesia, indications for general anesthesia being very limited.
Main stages of the implantation surgery - local anesthesia - preparation of the implant bed
In order to place an implant, first it is necessary to expose a small part of the jawbone. After that, the implant bed is prepared using high precision instruments. Many dentist use drilling templates for a precise implant placement. These templates have a built-in drill sleeve which guides instruments with a millimeter precision. The implant is now ready to be placed into the jawbone.
- dental implant placement It usually takes from five minutes to half an hour to place one implant. Although it has to be noted, that sometimes the procedure might require more time, depending on the complexity of the surgical intervention and the number of implants to be placed. After the implant has been placed, the gum is sutured back.
- a temporary denture is placed on the implant for restoring the appearance and the possibility to chew (for immediate loading), taking into consideration the condition of the bone tissue, the position of adjacent teeth and of the teeth in the opposite jaw, the implant type etc.
