The treatment plan is based on the accurate and detailed assessment of the case, after a thorough examination of the patient’s mouth cavity, gums and teeth, as well as his general health condition, with special attention to chronic diseases (if any).
The dentist has to provide the patient with information regarding the benefits and shortcomings of different treatment options. Taking x-rays of the patient’s jaw is part of a standard examination procedure which is necessary for the elaboration of the treatment plan. The x-rays make it possible to assess the quantity of the available bone and to determine the exact place where the implant will be installed.
The most accurate form of x-ray examination is the computer tomography (CT scan). It is used when regular x-ray tests can’t provide all the necessary information concerning the bone tissue. In this case CT scan is used. CT scanners provide very detailed three-dimensional images that make it possible to accurately measure the quantity (height and width) of the available bone and its quality (bone density), and to plan the placement of the implant with extreme precision. It has to be noted that in many cases there is no need in CT scanning, regular x-ray tests are sufficient.
